Feast of St. Anne and Joachim

Yesterday was...

my feast day!

Yes, my name is Lisa, you have not lost your mind. But, Ann is my middle name, as well as a namesake of my Grandma, Mom, Aunt, Sister and Kevin's Grandma. St. Anne is the Grandma of Jesus and the patron saint of housewives, giving me so many reasons to love her!

To celebrate we began the day with donuts. I tried to get a picture of Mary Clare eating her donut and she said "Mom, I think we have enough pictures of us eating donuts" and turned her head away.

Um, I guess it's true. We eat a lot of donuts on feast days in the Cotter house. Point taken.

The rest of the day we did some decorating, including the poster you see at the top of the page. You can download the picture of St. Anne from Waltzing Matilda

St. Anne is traditionally shown wearing a red dress and green mantle: red for Divine Love and green for immortality. So, we had a red and green dinner consisting of green spinach with red crasins, red sauce pasta, green beans (fresh from our garden!) and sangria.

And the best part...

dessert pizza. So good, so so good. I called on the doughboy for the sugar cookie crust and used cream cheese frosting, easy.

For prayers to honor the day you can pray the Chaplet of St. Anne. I think that's how you know a saint is really cool, if they have their own chaplet.

The Final NST Post

Today I went to the FOCUS office for a final NST meeting to wrap up and evaluate the summer, so I felt it was fitting to wrap up NST on the blog as well.

Final thought... NST makes the Cotters holier.

At no other time can my kids play baseball or eat a meal with men and women who have devoted their lives to Christ as religious sisters, brothers and priests on a daily basis.

At no other time are we able to walk to daily mass or a holy hour.

A summers worth of Bible crafts.

At no other time are my kids going to Bible study three times a week with a bunch of friends.

Sister Mariella, one of my former residents at Benedictine.

At no other time do we get to catch up with some of our friends who have joined religious orders.

Newly ordained Fr. Vince Huber, who Kevin played
T-ball with when they were little boys.

At no other time are we able to grab confession after grabbing lunch in the cafeteria.

At no other time are we surrounded by so many young adults with hearts on fire for the Lord and His work.

At no other time do we see our kids grow more in their love of the faith and our love of each other.

Yes, it's crazy eating all of your meals in public. Yes, it's hard to live in a dorm room. Yes, it's exhausting to pack for a 7 week trip. Yes, it's hard to get back in to a schedule once you return. BUT, it's worth it and I'm glad we did it.

The Ridiculousness of NST

We are still in recovery mode from our seven week trip to FOCUS New Staff Training. As I sift through the laundry, pull the weeds in our yard, restock the house with food and try to get our kids into something that looks like a schedule, I thought it would be fun to remember just how joy-filled NST was.

NST is full of traditions, many of which are humorous. I carried my camera around as much as I could to catch them, but alas, you can't document them all.

To begin, there is a tradition of a men's colleges asking a women's college to be their "sister college." This means that they eat a meal together once a week, attend the etiquette dinner together and often do other fun activities throughout the summer.

Some men find this to be a great opportunity to have some fun.

This particular college decided that nothing says "will you be our sister college" like 80's attire and pizza rolls with candles in them. Seriously, look how ecstatic those women are.

Then there was the college who dressed up like Bl. Mother Theresa to ask the College of Bl. Mother Theresa to be their sister college. Fortunately it worked.

On a final brother/sister college note, here is a duo that decided to wear top hats and feathers to the etiquette dinner. Aren't they cute?

We also have some interesting ways of teaching staff policies. You see policies can be pretty boring, but playing FOCUS Policy Jeopardy with an option to answer a question or do a physical challenge makes them fun. Eight FOCUS regions combined to make four team of two regions each and often went head to head to try to nab the points.

Here you see the cereal eating competition outside the auditorium. Notice the laptop in Kevin's hands. He was skyping...

with everyone inside the auditorium. Logistical problem solved. Other physical challenges included arm wrestling, running the length of the quad, an egg toss and asking people to try and keep Mountain Dew and an Alka-Selzter in their mouth for as long as possible.

This one isn't as funny, but more so cute. For Father's Day we were a bit limited with our ability to spoil Dad, so we hung streamers around the dorm lounge and blew up some balloons.

Speaking of balloons...

these were NOT our Father's Day balloons. It was a dream of one of our newlywed wives (there were three newlywed couples... they got married, when on their honeymoon and then came straight to NST) to have a room filled with balloons. Naturally her new husband made the dream come true on her first birthday as a wife. My kids took full advantage of the fun.

Speaking of balloons again...

here are the kids playing with balloon animals at the annual talent show. One of the talents was balloon animal making. Mary Clare has a fishing pole with a man on the line, because the missionaries are "fishes of men"... ha ha, he he, ho ho.

In my opinion, the star of the show was our little comedian who got on stage to tell her state jokes. We were so proud of her for taking the stage and laughing her way through each punch line. While the jokes were funny, what made it even better was her excitement.

So there you have it. The result of putting 220 post college 20-somethings in a dorm together for six weeks... craziness ensues.

Home in Time for the Big 5th Birthday!

After 7 weeks of travel for FOCUS New Staff Training, we are home!! I still have 2 more posts I want to do on NST, but those will have to wait until later because something way more important happened yesterday...

Mary Clare turned 5! The cake is a pink pony incase you can't tell. Children were guessing a giraffe and a number 4, bummer.

To celebrate we began the day with donuts on the way to Mass.

Mary Clare is not messy.

Her brother is.

Then we went to an indoor playground for the morning.

They even have a whole room devoted to arts and crafts. Look at that skill, two handed painting.

To finish the day off some of our favorite families joined us for dinner and cake to celebrate.

Happy Birthday Mary Clare!

Happy 4th of July

The 4th is one of my favorite holidays. I have so many fond memories of spending the day with my extended family at Grandpa and Grandma's lake house in Nebraska. The holiday consisted of food, swimming, sand castles, wave runners and blowing things up. What more could a kid want?

While the lake house is no longer in the family, I still enjoy the mid-summer holiday and today was no exception.

Fortunately we were able to spend the holiday weekend with Kevin's parents! We began with a parade through the neighborhood.

The coolest part (pun intended) however were the popsicles and firetruck....

who sent some fake rain for all to enjoy.

Except for Paul...

who was scared.

So we didn't have his swimsuit, but he opted to splash in the run off for a while.

Thinking about it...

encouragement from big sister...

and were in.

We also had an early birthday celebration for MC. She helped make her own special flag desert. It was so very good.

We ended the evening with a little golf cart ride at the country club.

Golf is pretty American, so it fits.

We Actually do Work at NST

I've noticed that all of my posts on NST have been about the fun we have, so I thought perhaps I should share what Kevin does when he is technically working.

First of all, he teaches...

a lot...

21 classes in 4 weeks to be exact.

His teaching is the reason I haven't been blogging so much lately. You see, we own a Mac. Macs are great for things like powerpoint presentations. Kevin does a lot of powerpoint presentations, so he steals our Mac. All of my pictures are on said Mac, therefore, I haven't been blogging lately.

When he is not teaching he is emceeing. He has introduced some really cool people this summer like Jeff Cavins, Edward Sri, Curtis Martin, Peter Herbeck, and Jonathan Reyes to name a few. Basically he makes sure everything runs smoothly all day.

We are also the Deans of the married men's and married women's colleges. This means that I gather with all of the wives once a week and Kevin gathers with all of the husbands once a week for character formation studies. We also eat dinner together twice a week, have recreation once a week and hang out as much as possible in between.

Some of our married staff all dressed up for the etiquette dinner. They let me help teach that one.

In the midst of it all he keeps in contact with FOCUS headquarters about on going projects that he is involved in, works on continually maintaining and building up our MPD (Mission Partner Development, FOCUS missionaries get paid by the generosity of people who financially give to their work) and still manages to be a great dad and husband.

He's like superman, really. My kids are convinced of it and so am I.
